Walter Dennis

Private, 7709, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, killed in action, 2nd June 1915, aged 31

Born at Keadby in 1884, Walter was the eldest son and one of the 13 children of Atcheson and Elizabeth Dennis. His father was a farm labourer from Crowle and the family lived at various times at both Crowle and Medge Hall.

Walter was also the brother-in-law of William Clarke who married his younger sister Lily.

In 1912 Walter married Emily Gravil at Goole and the couple had one son born the same year. The family lived in Scunthorpe where Walter worked at Lysaght’s Iron & Steel Works. When he enlisted in the army at Scunthorpe in October 1914, his wife and son returned to live with her parents at Montague Street, Goole.

Walter was killed in action whilst acting as a sniper near Ypres. He was buried at the time in a battlefield grave site of which is now lost and is commemorated on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

Although not on a local memorial Walter is commemorated on several Scunthorpe War Memorials.
